Radiologist Salary In North Carolina

Radiologists made up 0.9 percent of the working population in North Carolina in 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is a fairly high number and with good reason: radiologists in North Carolina make a comfortable average salary that allows for only a little education while working in the ever-growing medical field.


State Average Salary


In May 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 7,470 radiologists worked in North Carolina. These radiologic technicians and technologists, as the BLS calls them, made an average or mean salary of $52,650 per year or $25.31 per hour. The median or 50th percentile wage was $25.11 per hour.


In-State Metro Comparison


Within the state of North Carolina, there are varying average salaries for radiologists in different metro areas. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the combined Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord metropolitan area as paying radiologists a mean or average salary of $54,890 per year, 4.3 percent more than the state average salary. The combined metro area of Greensboro-High Point paid local radiologists a mean $53,560 per year, while the Raleigh-Cary area was closest to the state average at $52,150 per year.


State Mean Comparision


North Carolina proved to be one of the higher paying states in the south as of May 2009 for radiologists. Nearby Kentucky paid an average of $45,840, 12.9 percent less than North Carolina. Tennessee similarly paid less at $48,960 per year, 7.5 percent less than North Carolina's average. While radiologists in North Carolina were better paid than peers in the region, many states paid significantly more. Massachusetts paid the highest mean salary for radiologists at $68,530, 30.2 percent more than North Carolina.


National Mean Comparison


The American mean salary for radiologists in 2009 was $54,180 per year or $26.05 per hour. This is 2.8 percent more than North Carolina's average salary of $52,650 per year. North Carolina ranks in the upper portion of the 25th to 50th percentile salaries for radiologists in the nation, making it a comfortable place to work, if not the highest paying.
