Tie Dye A Breast Cancer Ribbon

Show your support for breast cancer research by wearing a tie dyed ribbon.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All month businesses and famous people show their support for breast cancer research by selling pink colored products and wearing pink colored clothing. Regular individuals can show their support in the same way, or by wearing a pink ribbon pinned to their clothing. You can make a breast cancer awareness ribbon a little more interesting looking by tie dying the ribbon with fabric dyes to change the appearance of the ribbon.

Instructions

1. Tie up the ribbon in various shapes and designs using a combination of marbles, rubber bands or string. Place a marble at the end of the ribbon with several rubber bands leading off from the marble like a tail to make a starburst pattern. Tie rubber bands or strings spaced evenly along the ribbon to make tie dye lines. Use a bunch of marbles tied together with one rubber band to make circles.

2. Mix up the dye according to the package directions. Usually, the process includes heating some water, mixing in the dye and adding vinegar or some other solution to the water to make the dye soak into the ribbon rather than sliding off. Allow the dye to cool before placing the ribbon in the dye.

3. Soak the ribbon in each color that you want to add to the ribbon for at least 20 minutes. Soak the ribbons in the colors one at a time. Dark colors will show up best on the pink color of the ribbon. Yellow will probably have little impact on the ribbon's original color.

4. Rinse the ribbon in cold running water until the water runs clear and all excess dye is removed from the ribbon. Wring out excess water from the fabric.

5. Hang the ribbon out to dry in the sun or in an area that receives a lot of airflow to prevent mildew. When the ribbon is dry, twist the ribbon together into the breast cancer awareness ribbon shape, with the loop on the top with two loose ends at the bottom. Pin the ribbon to your chest to support breast cancer awareness.
