Find Out If Insurance Covers Cosmetic Surgery

Find out If Insurance Covers Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is expensive. On average, procedures cost from about 2,000 dollars for repeat treatment (such as fat dissolving injections) to over 10,000 dollars (for whole body reshaping). With that in mind, many people turn to their health insurance companies in hopes that they will cover the procedures, only to find out that, most of the time, they don't.

Find Out What Your Insurance Covers

1. Start by calling your health insurance company and asking what is covered under your plan and what isn't. Every company has a list of pre-approved procedures and your surgery will be classified differently at each.

2. Read your insurance plan booklet. Here, you will find quick answers about surgeries covered, the appeals process and your expected deductible.

3. Ask about exceptions, rule changes or special considerations.

4. Inquiry about the possibility of combining your health insurance with a discount card. Sometimes both companies agree to work together and take the discount burden from each other.

5. Don't give up too quickly. You may encounter a quick no, but some insurance companies will reconsider if you present a letter from your doctor showing why you need the procedure to improve your life.
