What Does A Veterinary Technologist Do

Veterinary technologists are integral parts of animal care. Considered the animal registered nurses of veterinary medicine, veterinary technologists perform a lot of the same duties most registered nurses do. This guide will provide an overview of some of the common duties veterinary technologists perform.

Location

Veterinary technologists primarily work in private clinics, animal hospitals and research facilities.

Supervision

Just as RNs work under a doctor’s supervision, veterinary technologists work under the attending veterinarian.

Lab Tests

Veterinarian technologists perform lab tests such as collecting specimens, dental prophylaxis, urinalysis and blood tests.

Aid

They provide aid to the veterinarian by recording patient medical history, making a diagnosis and discussing the patient’s care with the pet’s owner(s).

Other Duties

Veterinary technologists also administer medication to the animals and train new staff at the clinics and hospitals where they work.
