National Averages


According to PayScale's collection of the salaries of 456 American MRI technologists, the average 2010 salary for the position ranges from $48,879 to $67,789. Additionally, PayScale found an average hourly rate ranging from $23.43 to $31.72. These figures do not include non-cash components of compensation, but do account for overtime and bonus pay.


Experience


Like many professions in the medical field, the salaries of MRI techs is dramatically affected by years of accrued experience. According to PayScale's 2010 data, techs with one to four years of experience have a salary range from $40,986 to $55,301. After five to nine years of work, this range increases to $47,170 to $63,090. Finally, MRI techs working for 10 to 19 years have average salaries ranging from $58,958 to $67,742


Employer


PayScale breaks its findings down into employer types, and the results show that MRI techs working for private practices are the most highly compensated. Salaries for these individuals, as of 2010, range from $46,695 to $65,323. Those working at hospitals have a salary range from $40,059 to $61,446. Finally, those working for an independent company such as one who exclusively provides MRI services have salaries from $44,667 to $58,952.


Location


Based on PayScale's data, salary ranges for MRI techs do not vary much from state to state. Pennslvania, California, Texas and Florida all have salary ranges that reach a top end near $65,000. The exception to this trend is West Virginia, where the top of the range stretches to around $88,000, as of 2010.


Benefits


As one might imagine, MRI technologists jobs are frequently accompanied by benefit packages from the employer. According to PayScale's survey, 81 percent of MRI techs receive medical care from their work, 65 percent receive vision and 48 percent dental. Overall, only 16 percent of techs do not receive any benefits from their employer, as of 2010.
