The Starting Salary Of A Radiology Tech

X-ray technicians aid doctors in making a proper diagnosis.


Radiology technicians are in high demand in most areas around the country. Radiology techs are also known as x-ray technicians or radiologic technologists, and their job is to arrange patients for x-rays to help doctors in their diagnosis. X-ray techs generally command better than average salaries in the health care community.


Starting Salary of a Radiology Technician


According to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) the average starting salary for a radiology technician with less than two years of experience is $36,918. A December 2010 PayScale survey further defines starting salaries of those with less than one year of experience as ranging from $29,833 to $49,791.


Salaries With Experience


Salary ranges of those techs surveyed by PayScale tended to be flat for the first 10 years of their careers. Techs with one to four years of experience earned from $30,720 to $46,451, while those with five to nine years' experience ranged from $23,797 to $54,045. It wasn't until 10 to 19 years' experience that radiology technicians earned significantly more, with salaries ranging from $75,987 to $90,000.


Overall Radiologic Technologist Salaries


According to a December 2010 Salary.com survey, the lowest 10 percent of radiologic technologists earned less than $40,350 while the highest 10 percent earned more than $56,599. The middle 50 percent (between the 25th and 75th percentile) earned from $43,999 to $52,539.


Chief Radiologic Technologist Salary


Chief radiologic technologists may supervise other radiologic technologists and generally have at least four years of experience. Their median salaries in the United States are $74,141 according to a December 2010 Salary.com survey.
