Kansas State Board Of Healing Arts Medical Cme Requirements

Your doctor must continuously learn in order to keep his license.

The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts (KSBHA) licenses and regulates medical doctors (MD's), osteopathic doctors (DO's), chiropractors (DC's), and podiatrists (DPM) along with several other categories of health care providers. All are required to obtain continuing education in order to renew their licenses. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits can be obtained in two categories.

Credits in Category I

Learning activities that fall into Category I include lectures, workshops, symposiums, panel discussions, seminars and similar, formal learning experiences, that the KSBHA approves. The activity must be presented by someone whose practical or academic experience qualifies him or her to present educational information.

Credits in Category II

Category II includes lectures, workshops, seminars, symposiums, in-service training, professional publications and professional activities that do not meet the criteria for Category 1 but still are in a health-related field indirectly related to skills and knowledge of the healing arts. For example, patient- or quality-of-care-centered discussions or activities with other health care practitioners, taking part in journal clubs, clinical consultations with other practitioners, using self-instructional materials and electronic databases in connection to patient care.

How Much is Required

For MD's, DO's and DC's, the KSBHA requires a total of 50 hours of CME each year. At least 20 hours must come from Category I and no more than 30 hours can come from Category II. For DPMs, the CME requirement is 54 hours every three years, and there is no regulation regarding a minimum or maximum number of hours that can come from either category.

License Renewal Dates

Proof of CME completion must be submitted when renewing the practitioner's license. MD licenses expire on June 30 of each year and can be renewed anytime from May 15 to July 30. DO licenses expire on Sept. 30 and can be renewed from Aug. 15 to Oct. 31. DC licenses expire on Dec. 31 and can be renewed from Nov. 15 to Jan. 31. DPM licenses expire on Sept. 30 and can be renewed from Aug. 15 to Oct. 31.
