Jukeboxes, 45 records, poodle skirts and more make a 50s party fun for teens.
Teenagers enjoy gathering for a party and having a 1950's theme for this age group makes it easy to plan. Rock and roll, sock hops, and "Grease" themes lend themselves perfectly to invitations, decorations, games and food. Not only will your teens enjoy themselves, particularly if you choose to have a costume party of the 50's, but they may learn something about the culture of that decade.
Invitations
Use the concept of 45-rpm records for your invitation idea by using original records found at thrift shops or garage sales. Cover the original center label with a new label that has your party invitation information. Or, make your 45 records using black foam board or heavy construction paper, metallic paper, and metallic markers. Include any additional information about costume ideas and such on a separate card. If you plan to mail your 50's invitation, add some 50's type confetti to the envelope.
Decorations
Black and white, pink, red, and aqua turquoise are the colors associated with 1950's rock and roll. Streamers and balloons in these colors, plus an inflatable jukebox or guitars are a good start for decorations. Use the 45-rpm record theme of your invitations and suspend old 45's, or handmade records, from the ceiling with clear fishing line. Cut out music notes from black foam board or construction paper, spray them with glitter spray and hang them among the records. Cut-out and painted icons such as finned convertibles or blue suede shoes representing the 1950's can also be made. Use a jukeboxes with a hidden CD player to play hits of the 50's in the background throughout the party.
Games
Dancing was an important part of 1950's teen life and should be included in your 50's party for your teen by having a dance contest. Hula hoop and limbo contests are also popular, along with "Name that Tune" as songs from the 50's are played and the teens try to name the title. Rent a 1950's movie and play it for the teens while they are eating.
Food
The 1950's had soda fountains and drive-in restaurants, so design your food for a 50's teen party to incorporated those establishments. Sloppy joes, hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, and pizza will fit the theme and fill the teens. Bowls of munchies like chips and popcorn should be in several locations. Have a build-your-own-sundae or soda float table for the guests, but only have it available for a specific time.
Favors
A party goodie bag or favor can include sunglasses of the fifties, funky socks, red nail polish, black combs for the boys, anything with a pink poodle on it.
