There are a variety of preparation programs for those wanting to teach in North Carolina.
In North Carolina, there are many programs that lead to teacher licensure. The North Carolina Department of Education provides a list of approved programs guaranteed to lead to state licensure. For those who cannot complete a traditional degree program, there are programs that offer alternate routes to certification along with evening and online courses.
NC Teach
North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children is a teacher preparation program available at University of North Carolina, East Carolina University, Fayetteville University, North Carolina State University, Western Carolina University and Winston-Salem University. The program is designed for professionals who wish to become teachers and recent college graduates and provides an alternate route to certification. Candidates can earn certification to teach the middle grades (six through nine) and secondary education (nine through 12) or K-12 foreign language and special education.

Appalachian Learning Alliance
The Appalachian Learning Alliance is a group of community colleges in western North Carolina and Appalachian State University. Individuals enter a cohort with other students who begin and end the program together. Classes are available in the areas of elementary education, middle grades education, and special education. Full and part-time programs are available, including the option of taking classes in the evenings. Students take their preliminary course through the community college and transition to the Appalachian Learning Alliance for their junior and senior year courses which are provided on the community college campus by Appalachian State University. All programs meet the requirements for teacher licensure in North Carolina.

Partnership East
The Wachovia Partnership East works with East Carolina University to help students earn a four-year degree in elementary education, middle grades education or secondary education. Courses are offered at four different hubs at local community colleges to allow students to complete their education in the evenings. Many courses are also offered online.
