4. Schedule an appointment with your physician if you notice any symptoms. Your doctor will examine your hands and she may ask you questions about your pain and mobility level. For a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor will perform blood tests. 2. Slide the ribbons onto their corresponding bar in their order of precedence. In general, their order from left to right should be as follows: military decorations, unit awards, nonmilitary decorations, campaign and service awards, foreign decorations, markmanship awards and awards from other organizations. Do the same for the medals.

3. Attach any devices for which you qualify. For instance, the Asia Clasp is used to denote time spent in Asia, over the Navy Occupation Service Medal. Push the devices through the ribbon or top of medal and secure on the back of the bar.

4. If wearing ribbons alone, pin the ribbon bar over the left side of the chest so that the bottom edge of the bar is 1/4 inch above the pocket.

To write a self-reflection report for a research project, determine the context of the experiment, do research, perform the experiment, take notes and then put this information into your report.

Instructions

1. Determine the context of the experiment. Research projects often involve experiments. When you write a self-reflection report for the research project, you must state your reaction to the experimental process. For example, you may choose to conduct an experiment about how people react to criticism. In the experiment, you will have each individual write a poem, and then you will tell the person that their poem is not deserving of a grade. You will then record their emotional reaction.

2. Conduct research about your project. You can find information about your project online, at the library or at the bookstore. Read articles about psychology to help you to understand how individuals formulate ideas at different stages of their lives. For example, a child may become more upset than an adult when criticized because the child has not become secure with himself. As you read, take notes.

6. Create the introduction. Describe the concept that you chose to experiment on, why this issue is important for your research and the steps you took to find the results. For example, you chose to experiment on the emotional reaction associated with criticism. You chose to experiment on this topic because you believe that individuals will react more strongly to criticism when it is about something that expresses their creativity and feelings, such as poetry. To find results for this, you had some people write their own poems, and then you told each person their work was not adequate and could not receive a grade. You can then describe how your project relates to the articles you researched.

7. Discuss the method of the experiment. The method section for your self-reflection report consists of the samples, materials and procedure sections. For example, the samples you chose to use were people ranging from age 10 and above. You chose to use this large age range because people of different ages have different personal connections to their poetry. The materials were the poems. You did not have the people follow a specific format because you wanted them to be able to express their creativity. The procedure was the same for all people. You gave each person the same criticism to be able to accurately compare each person's reaction.

8. Discuss the results of the research project. How you chose to record your results provides your personal insight to the project. For example, you wrote down what each person said, and their body language, after you criticized their poetry.

9. Provide a discussion section of your results. This is the portion of your report where your personal opinions and thought processes are the most prominent. For example, you may state that you originally hypothesized that children from the ages of 10 to 12 would be more sad than indignant about the criticism of their poetry because children seek approval in adults. You believed that teenagers from 13 to 19 would be more indignant and defensive because they want their individuality and are searching for ways to express their independence.

10. Proofread the report out loud. As you read, make sure that you incorporate your own thinking processes. The concept of a self-reflection report involves your own thinking in regards to the project you created.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that can manifest itself initially in the lungs, heart, or abdomen. Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that develops in glandular and membranous tissue in organs throughout the body. Although both cancers can be life-threatening and both are known to affect the lungs, they differ in cause, symptoms and treatment.

Causes

Mesothelioma is caused exclusively by asbestos exposure, either directly such as in occupational exposure, or indirectly, such as when a worker's family inhales asbestos fibers that came home on his clothes.

Adenocarcinoma can also be caused by asbestos exposure. However, it can also be caused by cigarette smoke, radon, or other materials including as mustard gas, uranium, or gas fumes.

Symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath and buildup of fluid in the lungs or chest cavity. Adenocarcinoma can also cause these symptoms, as well as bloody cough, fever, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatments

Treatments for mesothelioma include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, drugs such as Alimta, and surgery to remove tumors or entire lungs, or to drain excess fluid.

Adenocarcinoma also can be treated by removing part or all of a lung. Video-assisted thoracoscopy is another treatment for adenocarcinoma. A plastic tube is inserted into the chest to help diagnose and treat the surrounding areas with surgery to remove abnormal tissue.

Affected Areas of the Body

Mesothelioma can affect the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart.

Adenocarcinoma can affect the lungs, breasts, colon, prostate or stomach. In some cases, the pancreas and cervix are affected.

Prognosis

The prognosis for both cancers depends on how early they are detected. Mesothelioma often goes undiagnosed until it's in the later stages. The disease can lie dormant for up to 50 years, but when symptoms do emerge, it can kill within mere months of being diagnosed, with most patients not lasting more than two years. According to Intelihealth, about 17% of people with adenocarcinoma are expected to live over five years after being diagnosed.

Basic Difference

The basic difference between the two cancers has to do with the types of cells affected. Adenocarcinoma attacks epithelial (membrane) cells. Mesothelioma can affect epithelial cells and connective tissues.

Aromasin (generic name exemestane) is a medication that is available by prescription only and is used to treat early-stage breast cancer that is estrogen-receptor positive in postmenopausal women.

Time Frame

Aromasin is often given to women who have been using the breast cancer drug tamoxifen for two to three years. Tamoxifen use is stopped, and Aromasin is taken until a total of five years of combined tamoxifen/Aromasin use has occurred.

Function

Aromasin aids in stopping the production of estrogen in postmenopausal women. This lowers the risk that any estrogen-dependent breast cancers grow.

Benefits

According to Aromasin.com, using the medication after using tamoxifen for several years reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence versus taking tamoxifen for five years.

Side Effects

Several side effects of Aromasin listed by the Mayo Clinic include cough, an increase in blood pressure, depression, abdominal pain, hot flashes, insomnia and constipation.

Warning

Do not take Aromasin if you are taking medicine containing estrogen. This drug may weaken bone density, so you should talk with your doctor about risks. If you have chest pain or shortness of breath, stop the medication and call your doctor.

Decorate Cakes With Lights

Adding lights to a cake gives it an ethereal feeling and a sense of magic at the wedding. Although the process is fairly simple, preparation is key, so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to work on your project. Some wedding couples prefer that their wedding be as unique as possible, and adding lights to the cake is definitely an option. However, you can use this technique on practically any cake, even single layer cakes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Bake the cake in the flavor of your choice and ice it with the icing that you prefer.

2. Put assorted flowers on the cake in a pleasing arrangement. Larger flowers should be on the bottom layer, with smaller flowers up higher on the cake. Ensure that you are using pesticide free flowers and greenery, or opt for plastic materials.

3. Freeze the cake and flowers for at least six hours in a large freezer. This will ensure that the lights do not damage the finish of the cake.

4. Clean your battery operated plastic coated rope lights with a damp rag and a small amount of soap. Wipe the rope lights clean with a separate damp cloth to remove any soap that is left and allow the rope lights to dry completely.

5. Set the cake in the area where it will be served. Arrange more flowers around the bottom of the cake to make it look more natural.

6. Position the battery pack of the rope lights at the back side of the cake. Press the rope lights into the bottom of the cake and work your way in a spiral fashion around the cake, bringing the lights up to the top. Allow the rope light to rest gently on the icing. Place flowers in strategic positions to enhance the lights.

7. Insert the free end of the rope lights gently into the icing on the top layer of the cake. Arrange flowers around the end of the rope lights to disguise them.

8. Ensure that the battery box at the base of the cake is completely covered with flowers. Remember to be very careful when cutting the cake, so that you don't cut into the rope lights.

A mobility van is a van that is equipped to meet the needs of a handicapped person. A mobility van is usually a regular van that is modified to meet the needs of the person using the van. Purchasing a modified van typically costs $20,000 to $30,000. The cost of modifying a standard van is typically $5,000 to $15,000 depending upon the type and extend of modifications that need to be made to accommodate the user. Banks and credit unions commonly offer auto loans that can be used to cover the costs associated with purchasing or modifying a mobility van. Other options for obtaining funding also exist.

Finance a Mobility Van

1. Apply for financing through a patient-focused financing company, such as PFS Patient Financing (see Resources). These companies tend to be more lenient with their qualification requirements than traditional banks. Additionally, they tend to offer more favorable repayment terms than banks. Many of these companies require a doctor's statement along with employment verification to obtain funding. Have these documents available before contacting these companies.

2. Contact your local Veteran's Administration (VA) to apply for funding through the VA if the van will be used for a veteran. (See Resources) Grants are available through the VA for veterans to utilize to purchase a mobility van or to modify a traditional van. The application process typically involves a medical exam by a VA doctor and a request for funding.

3. Contact the Knights of Columbus chapter in your local area (see Resources) to apply for a grant from them. The Knights of Columbus offer grants that can be used to purchase or modify a mobility van if the mobility van will be used for a child. Usually, a doctor's statement outlining the nature of the disability and need for a mobility van is required with the application, though this can vary from chapter to chapter.

Decide Which Charities To Help At Christmas Time

Charity is something most human beings think about often. Charities help the homeless, children, senior citizens, families, hospitals and so much more. However, the sheer volume of charities that exist today can make it difficult for someone to determine which ones to support. Below are some ideas for deciding which charities to help at Christmas time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the type of support you are willing to give the chosen charity. In other words, decide whether your support will be strictly monetary, on a volunteer basis or something else. For example, Toys for Tots likes donations of new, unwrapped toys.

2. Decide whether there is a particular age group, if any, that you want to support. For example, many people prefer to help charities that do things to help children. Others want to help senior citizens.

3. Determine if there is a particular ailment, if any, in which you are interested. For example, someone might donate to an AIDS Foundation because a member of his family suffers from the disease.

4. Figure out how much money, time or other items you can afford to donate. A handful of charities prefer not to accept donations under a certain dollar amount. If the amount of money you can afford doesn't reach their goal, then you can eliminate that charity from your list.

5. Commit to making the charitable contribution ongoing or establish it in a onetime shot from the outset. If you do not inform charities at the time of donation that it is a one-time gift, they will put you on a mailing list and barrage you with requests for contributions all year long.

6. Narrow down your charitable choices to three to five options. Then research each one on the Internet to determine how much of your contribution will actually reach the people for which it is intended. Unfortunately, some charities have massive overheads. That means that sometimes as little as 10 percent of your donation goes where you expect it to.

7. Contact your top charity choices to find out exactly what each wants and needs and their level of urgency. For example, if their primary desire is volunteers who can donate at least eight hours a day every week, that might be problem. People who work 40- to 60-hour workweeks might not be able to meet those kinds of needs. Therefore, such a charity could be eliminated from the list. Some charities experience a holiday rush and have a greater need than others. You might want to take that into consideration in making your decision.

8. Decide how many of your top charity choices you want to support. Depending on their identified wants and needs and your bank account, it is possible that you could donate time to one charity and money to another. For example, you might serve Christmas dinner at a local food bank as well as donate money to St. Jude's hospital.

Virginia Law On Providing Medical Coverage For Domestic Partners

Virginia has an interesting history of insurance laws and the dubious honor of briefly being the only state to prohibit employers from extending employee insurance to its domestic partners. As of 2011, Virginia has no law recognizing domestic partners.

Recognition

Virginia has a statute defining marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. The state uses this statute and the language in the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act to deny recognition of same-sex marriages, domestic partnership, civil unions or any other arrangement that is not marriage as defined in the statute. No city or county government recognizes domestic partners or extends any benefits. No laws or statutes exist granting domestic partners next of kin status, hospital visitation rights or the right to make medical decisions when the other partner is unable.

Arlington County v. White

Arlington County briefly offered health insurance benefits to the domestic partners of county employees, extending benefits already available to the husbands and wives of county employees. A group of taxpayers filed a complaint and took the county to court, where the State Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the county had no authority to override the state marriage statute and that, as a result, no employer could offer marriage-like benefits --- such as health insurance --- to unmarried couples.

2005 Legislation

In 2005, the state passed a law permitting private employers to extend benefits to "any other class of persons as may mutually be agreed upon by the insurer and the group policy holder." Companies have used the law to extend benefits to the domestic partners of employees; domestic partners usually sign an affidavit with the insurance company stating that they are in a committed relationship.

Health Care Challenge

President Obama's 2010 health care reform included a measure to require all Americans to have health insurance by 2014. In 2010, Virginia's attorney general sued the federal government, claiming that the law was unconstitutional and every American has the right to not have health coverage. In December 2010, a federal judge ruled in the attorney general's favor, and as of 2011 the case appears headed to the Supreme Court.

Naturopathy

Practitioners of naturopathy believe that the human body has an ingrained ability to heal itself. Therefore, naturopathy is designed to help your body use its natural healing ability to the fullest extent possible.

The goal of naturopathy is to use methods that support and enhance the treatment process while striving to be as non-invasive as possible. These methods can include changes in your diet or implementation of a new diet, exercise programs designed specifically for you, and changes in your lifestyle.

Some naturopathic treatments may also include botanical medicines, which are medicines derived or manufactured from plants or plant parts, and vitamin and mineral supplements.

Mind-Body Medicine

Mind-body medicine is also sometimes referred to as holistic medicine. Its purpose is to involve the mind, the body and the spirit in the treatment process.

Mind-body or holistic medicine advocates a team approach to the treatment process. The team includes any conventional doctors or health care professionals who are involved in your treatment, and you. In other words, you are treated as a person, not patient A or the person in the room down the hall with breast cancer.

Many people believe that mind-body or holistic medicine means you cannot receive conventional medicine or treatments, such as chemotherapy or prescription medication. This is not true, as these are often used in conjunction with the holistic approach.

Mind-body or holistic medicine does advocate and encourage your participation in support groups, and in beginning or continuing any religious practices or meditation techniques you may consider important.

In addition, some holistic practitioners may go so far as to look into your personal life, such as how well you are or if you would be able to care for yourself, and family or caregiver support and availability. In this way, they can be assured that stress will not be a negative factor in your treatment protocol.

No Medicine or Treatment

Deciding not to take any type of medicine or participate in any form of treatment is as much an option as anything else. And it is one that some people with metastatic breast cancer choose.

However, only you can and should make that decision. A family member should not make it for you, unless for some reason you are unable to make the decision, and have left specific instructions for him or her to do so.

It should not even be suggested by a health care practitioner until or unless you have brought up the suggestion, or after all other options have at least been attempted.

Nutritional Support

It has not been proven that any specific food or herbal supplement will prevent or cure breast cancer; however, certain foods do help boost the immune system, add antioxidants to the body and help control nausea, flushing and other mild side effects of metastatic cancer treatments.

Certain herbal supplements will negate the effects of chemotherapy or other conventional treatments, so you should alert the health care team of any supplements you might be taking. Also keep them posted on anything you change in your diet or nutrition habits.

Surgery Only

Having surgery to remove the metastatic breast cancer or as much of it as possible from where it has spread, then opting not to undergo further treatment is a decision that some people make. Again, this must be a personal decision made by you, and no one else.

Radiologic technologists, or technicians, are experts in the area of medical imaging and use X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and mammography. While this is a popular career, there are a number of specific requirements to meet for one to become a radiology technologist.

Preparing in High School

Those who know they wish to enter into the field of radiology technology should not only strive for academic excellence, but specifically focus on the subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Providing evidence of predisposition in these areas of study will greatly improve the likelihood of being accepted into a radiology technician training program immediately after high school. Extracurricular activities and clubs that are involved in helping people or working with the community are also valued.

Formal Training

As with many medical technician careers, radiology technicians can obtain their education by completing a certificate training program, associate degree, or bachelor's degree. The institution in which a student enrolls must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Certification

Exams can only be taking after completion of an accredited training program, and 24 hours of continuing education every two years is required to maintain this certification.

Patients are often nervous or fearful during medical tests, so a radiology technician should have excellent communication skills and a calm and comforting demeanor. Instructions

1. Cut a small hole into the top of the shoe box lid. The hole should be wide enough for money to slip through.

2. Cover the lid and shoebox with construction paper. Glue the construction paper in place.

3. Flip through magazines and cut out words or pictures. Look for words or pictures that will remind you to give or remind you of the organization that will receive the donations.

4. Glue the pictures to the lid and shoebox. Paint over the pictures and words with decoupage glue to hold the pictures in place.

5. Let the glue dry before placing the lid on the shoebox.

About Pap Smears

All women the age of 18 or older, along with those who are under the age of 18 and are sexually active, are advised to have a yearly pelvic exam, which includes a pap smear. Typically, women will begin having an annual pap smear in a year to three years after they have become involved in sexual activity. Women should have this yearly exam done until the age of 30. After 30, it is recommended to have it done every two to three years if they have had consistently normal tests results.

Definition

A pap smear is performed by a doctor in order to take a sample of the cervix cells. The doctor then looks at the cells to see if there are any changes in the cervix. Such changes could be signs of cervical cancer or other conditions that can eventually turn into cancer. A pap smear is great for detecting precancerous conditions as well as any hidden, tiny tumors that can also be a cause for cervical cancer. Early detection is important if you want to prevent developing cervical cancer.

Procedure

A person might hear the word pap smear and automatically thinks that it would hurt. Luckily, a pap smear isn't painful, but it can be a bit uncomfortable. During a pelvic exam the doctor will perform the pap smear using a tool called a speculum. The speculum opens the vagina wide enough so that the doctor can examine the cervix. The doctor will then insert a plastic spatula and small brush in order to collect a sample of the cervix cells. Once the sample is extracted, it is placed in a solution which then is taken to the lab to be tested.

The Results

It can take a few weeks to get test results back so if you haven't heard anything in three weeks, go ahead and call your doctor's office. If you receive your test results stating it was a normal pap smear, this means that the cervix cells looked fine. If the results said that you had an abnormal pap smear, it means that your cervix cells did not look OK. At times you can have another pap smear done and other times you might have to take different tests. A colposcopy might also be suggested by your doctor. This requires a certain microscope to view the vagina and cervix. Also to note, is that a pap smear can sometimes recognize infections but is not a reliable way to detect STDs.

Symptoms

It is unlikely you will see any symptoms between your pap smears as precancerous conditions of the cervix are not likely to cause or show any symptoms. In order to know if there are actual problems, you will more than likely need to have a pap smear and pelvic examination done. However, when there is cancer in the cervix, abnormal bleeding is the most common symptom. You might experience bleeding between monthly periods, after having sex or after douching. Another common symptom is vaginal discharge. These symptoms do not mean that cancer is there, so in order to know if they are in fact precancerous symptoms you will need to see a doctor, especially if the symptoms develop or persist.

Achieving a More Accurate Pap Smear

There are ways you can help to get the most accurate results from a pap smear test. Do not have sex 24 to 48 hours prior to a pap smear exam. If your period should come up unexpectedly the same day you are scheduled for a pap smear, reschedule the exam. It is best to have an exam done 10 to 20 days after the menstrual cycle. Let your doctor know if you have any discharge, itching or any other problems in that area before your exam. If there is an infection present, you may have to take medication to clear it before having your actual exam. Avoid douching, deodorant sprays, feminine wash, and even using tampons 24 hours prior to your exam. Do not use any creams or any type of product on or in the vagina 24 hours before your exam to help ensure you have more accurate test results.

In 1945, Harry S Truman asked Congress for legislation to establish a national health insurance plan. Forensic technology is the field of study that deals with the collection, identification, preservation and processing of evidence that are often used to properly investigate crime scenes or accidents (See reference 1). Aside from the popular activities that "crime scene investigators" do on a popular TV show, graduates of forensic technology also deal with recovering vital data from shredded documents or tampered computer files. Forensic technology is also known as "forensic science." There are several Colleges and Universities in the US that offer forensic technology courses.

Cedar Crest College

Cedar Crest College offers a forensic science program that can be taken by aspiring forensic technicians. The School is accredited by the Forensic Science Education Program's Accreditation Commission (FEPAC), which is the United State's governing organization directly related to all types of forensic studies. The University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi offers the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Chemistry for students who would like to pursue a career in law enforcement and criminal investigation. University of Albany

University at Albany has a college department specializing in Forensic Chemistry as well. University at Albany also works hand in hand with the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center, giving students the edge to directly work with real forensic investigation while they are still finishing their studies.

Indiana University - Purdue University, Indianapolis

Indiana University offers the Bachelor of Science in Forensic and Investigative Sciences, which trains future forensic technicians. The degree came into being by the collaboration of three of their faculty departments; the School of Law, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the School of Science. Aside from chemistry and biology, students also undergo training on photography and imaging and law. They also offer internship at a real crime scene laboratory.
